Computing Services in the Library
What Computer Facilities are
Available in the Library?
There are 64 thin-client computing stations available
for public use on the First floor of the Library in the
Reference area.
All are attached to
networked printers.
These terminals allow users
to search the Internet with Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Users at these stations can
also create documents, presentations and spreadsheets
with Microsoft Office programs, both 2003 and 2007
versions.
There are also two 20 seat electronic
classrooms with student computing stations, a teacher
PC, VHS/DVD playback and video projection and are
connected to the Internet. These can be booked, by
faculty, for library instruction classes.
On the 2nd
floor of the Library is the Academic Computer Services
lab with PC and Macintosh computers.
Use of this lab requires a
currently valid NCC ID card.
Though all computers here
are connected to the Internet, the ACS personnel will
not help you with your research.
The ACS lab provides access
to a greater variety of software than the Library
stations and has technical staff available to assist at
all times. They also provide help with wireless access
in the Library and can fix problems with student Banner
access numbers.
The lab is open the same
days/hours that the Library is open.
They can be reached by phone
at 516-572-7620.
Where Can I Do Research?
The Library computing stations in the Reference area (1st
floor) offer access to NASCAT the online catalog to
Library owned items, online databases and the Internet.
Reference
librarians are here to help you with your research. The
computers in the Reference area are connected to
networked printers, but do not have drives for floppy
disks or CDs. They will accept flash drives. Students
doing work on any College computers should have a flash
drive to save their work.
How Can I Use My Laptop in the Library?
You are not allowed to plug laptops
into the College’s wired network.
For laptop network access
the Library has an
802.11b/g
compatible Wi-Fi system throughout the building.
To
access it, open your browser, choose the NCC Student
wireless network and follow the directions.
You will need a NCC ID
(Banner) number and your password to log in.
The network is open to
currently registered students, active faculty and staff
ONLY.
There is no GUEST access to
the wireless network.
If you cannot log in, the
ACS lab on the 2nd floor will assist you.
If you need to
plug in a power adapter to run your laptop, there are
locations throughout the building marked with pink or
yellow signs to indicate locations where there are power
strips.
Do not set up your laptop
where there is existing Library equipment installed or
stretch power cords across the floor as this is a safety
hazard and you will be asked to remove your equipment.
All usage
of the College’s network and computer equipment is
governed by the “Acceptable Use of Computer Resources
and Electronic Communication Policy of
Nassau
Community College”
as found on page 67 of the College Catalog.
