A practical and thorough treatment of DC circuit analysis, this text begins with coverage of scientific and engineering notation along with the metric system. Also included is a discussion of the scientific method – the basis of our modern system of investigation and technology. From there, basic concepts and quantities are introduced such as charge, current, energy, power and voltage. Subsequent chapters introduce resistance, series circuits, parallel circuits and series-parallel circuits. The text continues with chapters covering analysis techniques such as superposition, source conversions, mesh analysis, nodal analysis, Thévenin’s and Norton’s theorems, and delta-wye conversions; plus dependent sources, and an introduction to capacitors and inductors. RL and RC circuits are included for DC initial and steady state response along with transient response. The text also features over 500 end-of-chapter problems. A companion text covering AC circuit analysis picks up where this one leaves off.

The public is generally enthusiastic about the latest science and technology, but sometimes research threatens the physical safety or ethical norms of society. When this happens, scientists and engineers can find themselves unprepared in the midst of an intense science policy debate. In the absence of convincing evidence, technological optimists and skeptics struggle to find common values on which to build consensus. The best way to avoid these situations is to sidestep the instigating controversy by using a broad risk-benefit assessment as a risk exploration tool to help scientists and engineers design experiments and technologies that accomplish intended goals while avoiding physical or moral dangers.

The primary audience for this book is science and engineering undergraduate and graduate students. Standard training in the responsible conduct of research focuses on the research and publication process—treatment of test subjects, falsification of data, plagiarism, etc.—while largely ignoring the potential dangers to the public beyond the laboratory. This book helps to fill that gap in research ethics education. The book may also be of value in a course on bioethics, philosophy of science, or science and technology studies.

Dangerous Science explores the intersection of science policy and risk analysis to detail failures in current science policy practices and what can be done to help minimize the negative impacts of science and technology on society.

This text introduces embedded controller systems using the inexpensive and widely available Arduino hardware platform and the C programming language. It is intended for students in Electrical Engineering and Electrical Engineering Technology programs at the Associate and Baccalaureate levels. Unlike many Arduino texts, this text does not rely solely on the Arduino libraries. Rather, it “gets under the hood” and directly accesses I/O ports, pins and DDR, as would be expected in a traditional college level microprocessor/microcontroller course.

The companion laboratory manual introduces embedded controller systems using the Arduino hardware platform and the C programming language. Exercises include usage of seven-segment displays, switches and analog input devices; a reaction timer; PWM; an event counter and an arbitrary waveform generator.

This document specifies the recommended format to be used when submitting a formal technical report in a variety of disciplines and purposes. Also, this manual can be used as a guide to compose less formal reports, such as lab reports, that may consist of a subset of the items presented here. It is a useful general guide from which faculty can specify the particular requirements for reports in their courses.

This text covers the theory and application of operational amplifiers and other linear integrated circuits. It is appropriate for Associate and Bachelors degrees programs in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering and similar areas of study. Topics include negative feedback, comparators, voltage amplifiers, summing and differencing amplifiers, high speed and high power devices, non-linear circuit applications, regulators, oscillators, integrators and differentiators, active filters and AD/DA conversion.
