The Farm Worker Family Health Program (FWFHP) is a 13-year community partnership model designed to increase delivery of health care services for migrant farm worker families. During a yearly 2-week immersion experience, 90 students and faculty members provide health care services, including physical examinations, health screenings, health education, physical therapy, and dental care for 1,000 migrant farm workers and migrant children. Students and faculty members gain a deeper appreciation of the health and social issues that migrant farm worker families face by providing health care services in the places where migrant families live, work, and are educated. Although the model is not unique, it is significant because of its sustained history, interdisciplinary collaboration among community and academic partners, mutual trust and connections among the partners, and the way the program is tailored to meet the needs of the population served. This article is an examination of illegal immigration from Mexico to the United States, focussing on the relationship between the Hamptons, rich towns on Long Island, New York, and Tuxpan, an impoverished town in Mexico. How do Mexican migrants experience and respond to policies designed to affect their migration and settlement plans in Los Angeles? Which policies prove most salient? Drawing on life history interviews with authorized and unauthorized migrants in Los Angeles, we find that a mix of federal, state and local level policies affect the daily lives and behaviors of our migrant informants. Once in the U.S., however, given the current state of federal level policy, it is routine encounters with restrictive local level policies that shape our informants' daily strategies and settlement considerations. The outcome of these encounters is further mediated by the local context and the personal circumstances of the migrants themselves. Our findings suggest that it is crucial to consider a broad range of policy and practice, beyond formal immigration policy, not only in assessing policy's impact on migration trends but also in constructing comparative research designs in future work. Political corruption poses a serious threat to the stability of developing democracies by eroding the links between citizens and governments. Using data on national levels of corruption (Transparency International 1997 CPI index) and individual opinion (1995-97 World Values Survey), this study finds that Latin Americans are quite aware of the seriousness of corruption in their countries. The ensuing question is whether citizens can connect their views about corruption to appraisals of their authorities and institutions and of democracy more generally. Collectively, the findings suggest that they can, and that the necessary ingredients for accountability are present in Latin America. The possible dark side of mass (opinion on corruption is that pervasive misconduct may poison public sentiment toward democratic politics.
