ART 201 Guide for Professor Jones's Classes: How to Search the Databases Using Keywords

Searching JSTOR Arts & Sciences Database

JSTOR database carries many academic journals with expert discussion about ancient and medieval art, sculpture, and architecture.

KEYWORDS - it's important when searching the library databases to use keywords, meaning the most important words or phrases. Don't type an entire sentence or two many words on one line.

For instance, rather than type: 

JSTOR opens on a basic search page. Type  the title of a work or an artist in the search bar and browse article results:

 

 

Most of your results will be scholarly articles and book chapters that match your keywords. Some results might refer to other topics. Look for those that analyze the work, the artist, or related an Art topic related to either.

Click a title to open up a preview of the article and to access tools for downloading, citing, etc.

Once you have browsed articles from a basic search, try the Advanced Search link so that you can combine keywords. This is a helpful way to narrow to certain specific topics using hints:

 

 

With the Advanced Search, you can also add a third term to the Search Within Results box by clicking the Add a Row button and creating a third search box.

 

If you have two keywords that are closely associated, you can search both at the same time by separating them with the word "OR" in the search box:

 

Your total amount of results will display at the top. You can then limit results to articles first and then book chapters (or display all at once):
